The Bottom Lineby Aaron James, posted on Sat, Jan. 6, 2007
Notre Dame had absolutely no business being in the Sugar Bowl and it showed big time last week against the bigger, faster and infinitely more badass LSU Tigers. The Bayou Bengals looked tough the other night, no question. They looked like they might have been able to give the Buckeyes a run for their money on Monday night at Cliffs Notes Stadium or whatever but we'll leave that up to the Gators, who I think don't have a chance.

But back to the Irish for a smidge.... I think, at this point, Notre Dame really has no business being talked about in such an ethereal light anymore.  Sure they have great tradition and a wonderful campus and many outstanding graduates, no one is disputing that notion. However, facts are facts and the fact of the matter is Notre Dame hasn't won a bowl game since 1994. Ummm? That?s 12 years ago.

The Bottom Line is this... If the Domers were in the in the SEC they'd have a yearly invite to the Carquest Bowl.... Battling for spots with Vanderbilt, Texas Tech and East Carolina.

I suggest that Notre Dame ditch that foot high grass field they have at home and recruit some speed and athleticism. When they match up with a team on turf indoors it?s a joke. The Irish just can't keep up.

Charlie Weiss has instilled a winning attitude in South Bend but let's remember this is a team that's been shelled by SC for years, loses to Michigan State on a fairly regular basis (should have this year) and couldn?t win a bowl game against Burt Reynolds' rag-tag prison team in The Longest Yard.

In a nutshell, they're the most overrated program in the last 10 years?

If that Boise State - Oklahoma game went to DVD, I just might buy a copy. That was unlike any game in the history of modern college football. A game you conjure up in your mind when your 12 playing flag football on a tennis court. Think about it? When do THOSE plays ever work?

Hook and ladder?

Are you out of your mind? On 4th and 18?

Statue of Liberty? I can't remember the last time I saw that kind of trickeration.

Sooners coach Bob Stoops has to still be absolutely befuddled at what took place that night. It was the kind of game that will wake you up in the middle of the night twitching like a crack head. This was the kind of game that keeps people watching those awful early season bowl games because you just never know when something ridiculous is going to go down. You've gotta love college football.

College football is like golf. Most of the round sucks but the good stuff lasts a long time. Just like the memory of the Broncos 4th and 18 miracle at the Fiesta Bowl. A play that will go down in the annals of football history as one of the all time great plays.

Nice work Boise. The little guy is proud of you?

Until next week...
