Darren Arbet Named Head Coach of the San Jose SaberCats

San Jose - September 15, 2010 - The San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League (AFL) have announced that legendary AFL head coach Darren Arbet is back as the head coach. Terms were not disclosed per team and league policy.“We are very excited to be welcoming Darren back to the SaberCats,” said co-owner Dave Fry. “We have enjoyed great success with him as our coach and we look forward to competing for future ArenaBowl Championships as the SaberCats make their return for the 2011 AFL season.”
The 2011 and twenty-fourth season of the AFL will mark Darren Arbet’s 11th season as the SaberCats Head Coach, but his first year as part of the ownership group for the SaberCats. Arbet currently ranks fourth in AFL history in overall victories with 122 and third in playoff victories with 15. During his 10 years as head coach (1999-2008), Arbet led San Jose to a record of 122-51 and a winning percentage of .705. He made the post season nine times, while capturing seven Western Division titles, four conference titles and three ArenaBowl titles (XVI, XVIII, and XXI).
Back on January 13, 1999, the San Jose SaberCats hired Darren Arbet as their second head coach, whom by the way was the ninth former AFL player to become head coach of an Arena Football League franchise. Arbet first joined the organization during its inaugural season back in 1995 as the defensive assistant and special teams coordinator. During the team's second season, Arbet was named the team's player personnel director until becoming the team's general manager prior to the 2006 season. Prior to coming to the San Jose SaberCats, Arbet wa the assistant to the defensive coordinator in 1994 to the defunct Albany Firebirds. Arbet's coaching career in the AFL began after his playing career in 1989 with the Maryland Commandos and in 1988 for the Los Angeles Cobras, both as a fullback/linebacker.
