49ers Wrap Up

When it was the start of the 2010 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers had high expectations that nothing would be further from successful without winning the NFC West Division. If completed, this would end a seven year absence from post season action. Unfortunately, all hopes were at a lost. On Monday, all of the players and coaching staff had to come to a realization that the season was over and players began cleaning out their lockers much earlier than anticipated.
Opening the season 0-5 made the team's initial outlook on the post season seem dismal. The key loss to St Louis in week 16 was locking point of knocking the 49ers out of any playoff contention. It was with this loss than President Jed York finally made the decision to part ways with Head Coach Mike Singletary.
Throughout the season, I have spoken to many die hard and faithful 49er fans. One main question they had is why doesn't Mike Singletary change his style of coaching and adapt to the players in front of him, instead of trying to change the players? This lack of coaching flexibility is what eventually caused the 49ers a eighth non-post season year. In order to be a quality and effective coach in the NFL, one should be able to open their eyes and see things aren't working the way they initially wanted and adapt.
Other questions asked were like, why is Alex Smith still our quarterback after 6 non-productive years? And, why hasn't the team made an attempt to trade for an established big name starting quarterback? Well one answer I have is that Mike Singletary has been known for his loyalty to players and wanted to see things through to the end of the season. The other answer is that the 49ers did not have a general manager on the staff to make any of these decisiions, until Tuesday night.
The 49ers have the athleticism and quality players needed to compete for even possibly the Super Bowl. They do however, need to stregthen only a few components going into the next season, whether 2011 or 2012, depending upon the CBA. The areas I believe the team needs improvement on is their defensive backfield and offensive line. In the backfield they need a little more speed and height to battle some the tall and fast wide receivers. Their offensive line is another improvement area. Although young, if the Niners were to either draft or trade for one more key player to protect the quarterback, they could be one of the league's premier line in the next season or two.
Now for the obvious improvements, the quarterback and head coach. While at the game on Sunday, I spoke to fans in the parking lot discussing the idea of bringing Mike Holgrem back to the 49ers as head coach this time. Some other mentions were NFL analyst Jon Gruden and Jim Harbaugh from Stanford. For the quarterback thoughts, two key names were brought forth, Carson Palmer from the Cincinnati Bengals and Kevin Cobb from the Philadelphia Eagles. Kevin Cobb was put forth with a little more emphasis as he is a younger quarterback that could fit well into the West Coast Offense that needs to be put back where it originated, San Francisco.
I would like for anyone on your thoughts on 1) Who could resurrect the 49ers as the new head coach?; 2) Who could lead the team on the field as the new starting quarterback? Leave your comments.
